We started out as skeptics and are a very data driven family. But Mo’s team at Home Energy Saving Solutions completed a highly detailed and expert energy audit and, after their bid on insulation work was close to or matched other bids, they completed the installation of insulation needed to improve our home’s energy efficiency. Overall, the Home Energy Saving Solutions team were very professional, communicated their findings at both an expert technical level and in language the layman could understand, and ultimately performed high quality insulation installation to addresses issues we already suspected needed to be fixed. In addition, the team showed us how they measured our homes airflow turnover before and after installation of energy saving materials and could, therefore, demonstrably prove that their work had amazingly increased our energy retention by roughly 40% over the pre-insulation air flow measurements – and this was after we had already insulated our attic! The average range of improvement in air leakage rate when they do an attic air-sealing and rim-joist sealing is normally between 15%-25%, so this should be kept in mind. But for those looking to pay for this energy saving work, these numbers suggest that the effort pays off in less than five years – and you will also likely benefit from tax rebates making it cost effective in even less time. And of course, for those of you who are green, it is simply a good thing to do. For those who are number crunchers, before they did their work our home needed 4430 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM50) blown out to keep the house at a -50Pascal pressure difference, versus 2790 CFM50 with the test-out. Using a home volume of 14,064 cubic feet and an N-factor of 15.2, this equates to our Natural Air Exchange Rate improving from 1.24 to .79, an almost 40% improvement! In other words, the air in our home was completely turning over (leaving the house) about one and a quarter times every hour – resulting in our having to re-heat or re-cool new air every hour (temperature dependent). After their work, our HVAC system was needed to cool/heat 40% less air than had previously been lost/leaked outside. The results were impressive, and we feel the difference. Thanks Mo!
